StFX President Dr. Sean Riley named as a Member of the Order of Canada

St. Francis Xavier University President Dr. Sean Riley is among the 66 new appointments to the Order of Canada announced by His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General of Canada. He has been named a Member of the Order of Canada, being honoured for his contributions to St. Francis Xavier University and for his community leadership.

A native of Antigonish, Nova Scotia, Dr. Riley has had a remarkable career dedicated to public service, education, and community development, both locally and on the international stage. A StFX graduate and a Rhodes Scholar with a doctorate in international relations from Oxford University, he returned to his native Nova Scotia in 1996 after careers in government, finance, and business. 
StFX University and surrounding communities have witnessed incredible changes and improvements since his appointment as president in 1996. Dr. Riley has focused academic efforts on building StFX's position as a truly national university. To support academic and institutional momentum, Dr. Riley has spearheaded implementation of investments of $200 million in campus infrastructure and renewal projects. In parallel, Dr. Riley has been instrumental in building the international reach of the Coady International Institute, a unique Canadian institution in leadership development education. 
Dr. Riley is a board member of the Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada as well as a member of provincial and regional university organizations. Dr. Riley recently has been national Chair of Canada World Youth, and an institutional board member of the Royal Society of Canada. He currently serves on the Premier's Advisory Council on the Economy, on the Nova Scotia Research and Innovation Trust, the Board of the Pierre Elliot Trudeau Foundation, and on the Board of Directors of Agnico-Eagle Mines.  "Canada is served at so many levels by so many dedicated Canadians. I am honoured to be appointed a Member of the Order of Canada by the Governor General along with distinguished Canadians from so many walks of life,"  said Dr. Riley of the appointment. “ I am also grateful to many colleagues and friends who, over many years, have helped me contribute to the StFX community, to Nova Scotia, and to Canada."

The Order of Canada, one of our country’s highest civilian honours, recognizes a lifetime of outstanding achievement, dedication to community and service to the nation.
